A Guide for the Student on the Ways and Means of the Warg and the Stalking of Prey

Camping Spots – Glan Vraig Area

With the various landscape changes that came to the Ettenmoors with Riders of Rohan the old favourite warg camping spots have changed. Here we are going to take a look at some of the new camping spots and how best to use them.

Note: This is by no means an exhaustive list of good camping spots. Each server will differ in its freeps’ habits and some of these spots may not be applicable to your server. I have deliberately gone with what I believe to be the busiest routes for freep traffic, but you may find that your own server varies.

Legend: Freep travel routes are denoted in blue. Warg camping spots are denoted in red.

Glan Vraig Intercepts

In the map above we see the general Glan Vraig area. The blue lines show some possible freep gravel routes, the ones likely to see the most traffic. There are three basic routes here: Glan Vraig towards the south west corner of the map; Glan Vraig towards the centre of the map and Glan Vraig towards Tirith Rhaw. We shall deal with each in turn.

Glan Vraig – South East

These are the routes freeps will likely take to reach places like Lumber Camp, Hithlad Outpost, Hoarhallow and so on. The key with these routes is to intercept the freeps relatively close to Glan Vraig itself. The farther away they get from Glan Vraig the more their route in this area can vary so it’s best to play it safe.

Note that the area marked for camping (the red circle) is a little way down the hill from Glan Vraig itself. There are two reasons for this. The first is what I mentioned above: intercepting the freeps as early as possible is safest for these routes. The second is that you don’t want to be too close to Glan Vraig itself or the freeps can potentially run back to their one shotter NPCs. This position strikes a good balance between being able to intercept the most traffic whilst reducing the possibility of escape for the freeps.

Glan Vraig – Centre

This is the route freeps will likely take when travelling towards Tol Ascarnen or when heading towards Elf Camp via the cow field. It’s pretty much a straight line from Glan Vraig until it reach the old EC Crossroads. At that point the freeps might go towards Tol Ascarnen or head towards the cow field as they make their way to Elf Camp. Thus the best position for camping is before the route splits.

I have marked the camping as being the Circle of Trees, but really any spot along the route up until the old EC Crossroads would work just as well. I personally wouldn’t go much further towards Glan Vraig than the Circle of Trees because, as above, the closer to Glan Vraig you intercept the better the chance the freep has of making it back to safety. The Circe of Trees should allow you a good overview of freep traffic whilst being far enough away from Glan Vraig to prevent the freeps reaching the safety of the one shotter NPCs.

Glan Vraig – Tirith Rhaw

This is the route freeps will take from Glan Vraig to Tirith Rhaw. The freeps might be headed for either the front or back door of the keep so I have positioned the camping spot just before the point where those routes diverge. This will allow you to intercept traffic headed to either the front or back of the keep.

Now you may be wondering why I have positioned the camping spot so close to the keep itself rather than further towards Glan Vraig. There are a number of good reasons for this. First of all this camping spot works best when Tirtih Rhaw is under attack and freeps are either riding in to defend it or to attack it. Either way chances are there is a creep raid at the keep as well, which means that should things go badly for you there is at least the possibility of some friendly forces nearby. Secondly there is the psychological impact of the spot. Freeps riding towards Tirith Rhaw will be alert for wargs (or at least they should be!) and as the keep seems within reach they have the potential to relax their guard a little, thinking that they have made it to safety. If so then an attack can panic them a bit more, which gives you an edge. Thirdly it’s nice to have a spot of variety, we don’t want to be always hanging around Glan Vraig.

These are good solid trade routes for wargs. Glan Vraig is the freep home base so it is guaranteed to see a steady stream of activity. You just have to make sure you don’t get too eager and creep too near Glan Vraig itself because that simply gives the freeps more opportunity for escape. As ever a little patience pays off and these routes should be active at most times of the day so they are a good choice during quiet periods.
