The Benefit Of Anonymity
You may have noticed that many players choose to mark themselves as being anonymous in LOTRO, especially in the Ettenmoors. There is good reason for this, especially for the warg so let’s take a look at why you should choose to be anonymous.
What Is ‘Anonymous’?
No, not the hacker group, rather anonymous in LOTRO is a game option that makes you appear as if you are offline to other players. They can still send you a tell and will know that you are online, but they won’t see you listed in the social panel when looking to see who is online in a given region of the map nor will you appear online if they have added you to their friends list. You will show as online in a tribe list if you are a member of a tribe.
Why Be Anonymous?
The most obvious answer of course is so that people don’t know if you are online. This simple answer belies a greater role for being anonymous though because by not appearing online to other players you give yourself, and your packmates, some real advantages.
First of all let’s remember that wargs are generally disliked amongst freeps. More than any other creep class the freeps have it in for us wargs. They don’t appreciate how awesome we are so they try and hunt us down and kill us. Now if you have been going about your wargy business killing freeps they might not take kindly to that and decide they want to specifically kill you! Of course they can’t find you because your stealthed right? Wrong!
Believe it or not, but some freeps will get someone to log into the creep side to scan the social panel to see where a certain person is located. It won’t give the player’s exact location, but even a general idea of their location is enough to let the freeps zoom in on possible locations you might be patrolling. Clearly that’s not a good thing. Hence the anonymous options; it stops them from doing that.
As a follow on from that if you are in a pack or a raid and you are anonymous freep spies can’t log in and discern the general location of your group. You’re not just protecting yourself in this situation, you are helping your pack or raid out too.
Just think of it as another layer of stealth.
How Do You Do It?
Open the social panel by pressing ‘O’. That’s the letter ‘o’, not a zero.
Select the ‘Group’ tab.
Click on the box beside where it says ‘Anonymous’.
